Some General Motor Trade Insurance Definitions

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

As a motor trade insurance policy holder you probably are aware of your cover wording. We have prepared below some definitions that may help you:

Road Risk Cover – Indemnity for damage or loss to any insured vehicle whilst being used on the public highway, temporarily parked during the course of a journey or parked at the home address of the insured.

Third Party, Fire and Theft – Loss by fire or theft of vehicles in the possession of the insured up to a maximum amount as declared and accepted by the underwriters. Trade value will apply to own vehicles. Excluding any loss whilst kept on or adjacent to any Trade Premises unless specifically covered on the policy – i.e stock of vehicles cover.

Accidental Damage – As per Third Party, Fire and Theft but including damage  to vehicles in your possession – to include accidental damage, vandalism, and malicious damage.

Demonstration Cover – Cover extends the policy to allow the prospective purchaser of an Insured vehicle to drive such vehicle before deciding on purchase. The person must hold the relevant full UK driving licence and be accompanied at all times.

MID – Because of the 4th EU Motor Insurance Directive the policyholder is obliged to provide the Motor Insurance Database (MID) with the registration numbers of vehicles that are owned by or in his/her custody or control for motor trade purposes and will be driven, used or parked on a road or public place. However, the policyholder is not required to provide details of customers vehicles in his or her custody or control for repair or servicing etc.

Split Indemnity – The ability to split the amount of cover given between your own and the client’s vehicles. Ie you could cover £10k for your own vehicles and £20k for customers resulting in a price saving

Use Your No Claims To Get Cheaper Motor Trade Insurance

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

The majority of people who have got a regular car insurance policy will be aware of the fact that by building up a solid few years of no claims bonus you should receive a lower premium for your cover. There will be a proportion of people who work in the motor industry though that do not realise that they can also get a discount on their motor trade insurance policy as well with their no claims bonus. The reduced rates will work out just like a private policy in the majority of cases but we have given a brief outline of some of the main areas below.

For anyone who is only moving to a traders policy now, they may be able to use any no claims bonus that has been accrued on their own individual private vehicle cover. Using your personal no claims policy for trade cover should not mean that your private cover is affected in any way so it can be extremely worthwhile looking into. You will usually find that you can get a bonus of up to five years no claims – although you will need to check with the specific insurer. If you do have the maximum amount of five years then you may find that you can get a massive reduction in the overall cost of the premium with discounts of up to 75% a possibility!

When you take out a traders policy you may still get the same protection for your no claims bonus as you can for your private cover. You should take note though that if you were to end up making a claim on your cover and then decided that you wanted to chance to a different provider, the new company may not necessarily acknowledge the previous protection that you had. Deciding not to protect your no claims will mean that if you do end up making a claim with your insurer, your bonus will either be reduced by a year or two (down to 2 or 3yrs) or, even worse, it could be rescinded altogether.

Whenever you are looking to take out a motor trade insurance policy, you should look into whether or not you are eligible to receive a no claims discount. Even if you have only built up your bonus on your own personal vehicle cover you will still usually be able to get a good reduction on the price of your premium so you should look into this before diving in.

Part Time Traders Insurance Is Perfect If You’re Working a Second Job

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

If you are somebody that has decided to supplement their regular income by taking on a second job that involves working with vehicles in any way then you may be eligible for a part time traders insurance policy. Just because you are not carrying out the role as your full time occupation doesn’t mean that you can’t still be classed as working in the motor trade. Whether you are selling a couple of cars per month or you are running a valeting service at the weekend, getting yourself insured correctly will bring about a number of benefits.

Due to the fact that you are not working in the trade as your main job role means that a normal motor trade policy is not really the most suited for your situation. You will generally find that taking out part time cover will still provide you with all of the benefits that you would otherwise get with a regular policy. You will find that you can still add extra cover onto your policy meaning that if you need to let people test-drive with demonstration cover or you can get public liability cover added as well.

You may find that some insurance providers will deem someone who is only working in the trade on a part time basis to be an extra risk but this isn’t fair at all. Just because it isn’t your main source of income doesn’t mean that you are going to be any less careful about carrying out your work.
If you have come to the decision that some sort of motor trade related work is going to be a good way for you to boost your earnings then make sure that you go about things the right way. Getting yourself a part time traders insurance policy that meets your own personal requirements should be one of the first things that you do. When looking for the right company to use you should find someone who can give you cover that is tailored to your specific situation so that you are not paying for cover you will never need. Finding a company that has experience in your trade will ultimately mean that you will get a much better deal and will be able to count on their knowledge to find you the best cover available.

A Clocked Vehicle Can Affect Your Motor Trade Insurance

Caution for Motor Traders Insurance holders

Clocking the mileage on a vehicle has always been a worry to anyone looking to purchase a second hand vehicle.  However, you may be surprised to learn that altering the mileage on a vehicle is not actually illegal.  Selling a vehicle and not informing the purchaser that the mileage has been altered is the actual crime – which can result in the seller being convicted for fraud.

BBC Radio 5′s Investigates show, revealed that out of 10 secretly recorded calls to 10 internet based mileage correction companies, six were prepared to reduce the mileage/clock the vehicle, even when knowing that this was being done to mislead a potential purchaser.

BBC also revealed that the recorded mileages on MOT certificates on over 600,000 vehicles, currently on our roads in Britain had decreased.  Motorcycle mileages had also decreased on over 26,000 bikes and again on over 19,000 commercial vehicles

As a leading Motor Trade Insurance Broker, Think Insurance, believes that the culture of clocking vehicles needs to be looked at as a bigger picture – it not only misleads potential purchasers but also increases the payment of insurance claims fraudulently – thus ending up costing you more on your insurance premiums!

Philip Swift of Claims Management & Adjusting Ltd – a company that deals with claims on behalf of some insurers said:”We are seeing lots of claims where the mileage today is lower than the recorded mileage 12 months ago, this can significantly reduce the value of a vehicle’

The answer? The only real possibility may lie with newer technology – this however will come at a price.

Keep Your Speed Down On The M4!

Friday, December 10th, 2010

People with Motor Trade Insurance policies beware the cameras that never sleep!

While road works are taking place on the M4 in South Wales, average speed check cameras have been installed. The safety devices between Junctions 24 (Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park) were installed to make sure the temporary 50mph speed limit is adhered to.SInce the cameras introduction in Setember 2009 over 40 million vehicles will have passed through the stretch, at an estimate of 110,000 per day.  Only 6500 drivers were caught exceeding the limit, which goes to show the majority of motorists had been encouraged to drive safely within the limit by the cameras presence.

Jim Moore, manager of the Wales road casualty reduction partnership said:“It is encouraging to see that, on the whole, motorists are complying with the reduced speed limit of 50mph while important roadworks take place.”

As a leading  broker Think Insurance would hope road users understand that the reduced speed limits are there not to make your journey longer, but for the safety of motorway workers and road users whilst the road repairs are finished through the day and night. This doesn’t alter the fact however that most people see cameras as an inconvenient money grabbing device with no genuine purpose! We couldn’t possibly comment.

The work has an expected completion date of summer 2011, the cameras will then be removed from the M4.

Icy Weather Means Extra Care On The Roads Is Needed

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Think Insurance, the specialist Motor Trade Insurance company, comments on the weather:

Snow and ice have been causing havoc all over the UK – getting petrol, groceries and even medical supplies to their destinations has been disrupted. With days of heavy snow fall, road systems have been heavily effected and children have been getting some early time off school, but now a new problem arises. As the temperature begins to rise signs of a big thaw have seen floods in the Strathclyde area and road users are being told to drive with extra caution.  The emergrncy services are also warning of ice frozen lakes and ponds, pipes bursting which will cause flooding and the potential of icicles falling from buildings.

As a leading  broker who hears from traders nationwide  we agree our roads are improving for now, however road users should still take extra care and still think about whether the journey really is necessary. With weather forecasters predicting the weather soon returning to below freezing temperatures it look as though we could be in for a long hard winter.   Schools are getting back to normal and other supplies are beginning to reach their destinations, although there will be some shortage of things until everything returns to normal.

Finance Secretary John Swinney said: “As the severe weather lessens it grip over the weekend we anticipate an increase in demand for fuel.” “Grangemouth refinery is preparing for this by ramping up operations to ensure that there is enough fuel available to allow people to get out and about over the weekend.”

Online Car Sales On The Increase

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Think Insurance specialises in part time motor trade insurance and it has come to our attention that dealers are sourcing their used car stock online as the big freeze hits the UK.  Sources from Manheim, one of the UK’s biggest Vehicle Auctioneers, have been quoted as  saying that their Simulcast product ( online bidding ), normally accounting for 25% of their auction sales, has risen dramatically upto 50% at some of their sites.

British Car Auctions were yesterday also predicting similar results on the internet.  They also warned of a heavy oversupply of light commercial vehicles in the market place, that the increase was sudden and dramatic coinciding with the traditional year end dip.  They felt that most vehicles had come into the market earlier than their planned de-fleet dates because of business and economic pressures on the operators themselves.  Manheim also reported a big drop in their sales conversion rates on vans and commented that real interest had fallen in them quite substantially.  Price guides for vans or light commercials are likely to be hit heavily if the over supply continues over the festive period and into the new year.

In other Auction news Manheim have announced that a deal has been struck with SAAB GB to manage the re-marketing of their ex-rental, press, demo and management vehicles.  Manheim have also just introduced a new vehicle grading system for dealer part exchange vehicles sold on its online side Simulcast.  They have responded to feedback from customers where they require more information on vehicles.  This new grading system, shows more interior & exterior pictures and also allows the customer online upto 24hrs before the auction begins.  Manheim reported that that there was already a greater confidence from buyers and stressed the importance of accurate vehicle descriptions allowing their customer to make considered purchases.

In our last piece of news Manheim have announced the closure of their Rotherham site after 20 years of trading there. Manheim reported that the closure was as a result of restrictions on the lease which meant they were unable to expand the site as they and their customers would have liked.  Redundancy letters were issued to thirty of the staff there but Manheim hoped that some would relocate and take positions at other centres.

Chauffeurs Insurance Should Be At The Top Of Your List

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Operating in the chauffeur business means that whenever you are working, you are going to have at least one passenger in your vehicle with you. This in turn means that you are ultimately responsible for their safety whilst they are in your vehicle. In order for you to be prepared for all possible outcomes you must make sure that you are covered with the right chauffeurs insurance policy. Getting the right cover can be the difference between your business surviving in the event of a claim or being forced to go under. Anybody who works within the trade in any capacity should make sure that the policy that they take out is tailored to their specific industry. The right cover for a chauffeur should take into account the factors that are directly linked with their line of work.

One of the most important aspects of your policy when you are carrying passengers is public liability cover. With this level of protection you will be covered in the event of anyone who is in your vehicle being injured in an accident. Without this you could be faced with a potentially huge claim being made against you with no form of cover available. If this happens then this can be one of the ways in which your business may be crippled by the financial cost of having to meet any claim.

With the right policy you will also have a number of other benefits that come in extremely handy for your general day to day trading. The replacement vehicle cover is one of the most beneficial aspects as this means that if you are involved in an accident that was not your fault, you can get another licensed vehicle while yours is getting repaired. This obviously means that you do not have to be out of work while your car is in the garage getting fixed. If you have a number of different drivers who are operating the same vehicles then this is also covered with the right policy.

No matter if you are working as an upper market chauffeur for rich businessmen, or operating a limousine business ferrying party passengers, you have got to make sure that you are fully protected in the event of an accident. If you are carrying multiple passengers then you could be faced with numerous claims so the right chauffeurs insurance policy can literally save your business

Get Yourself Covered With Tradesman Insurance

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Working within one of the trades – such as a builder, plumber, electrician or any of the other numerous associated vocations brings about certain elements of risk, both to yourself and others around you. For this reason, anyone working within a trade has got to make sure that they are sufficiently covered in the event of any accident or damage occurring. A tailored tradesman insurance policy can provide you with all of the protection needed should you be faced with a claim. There are a number of situations that could require a claim to be made and failing to get adequate cover could end up with you being hit hard financially and even being prosecuted.

Two of the main parts of any policy that you take out will be employer’s liability and public liability cover. Obviously if you do not employ anybody then you don’t need employer’s liability – but if you do then this is a legal necessity. This will cover you in the event of an accident occurring where an employee is hurt whilst carrying out their work. Similarly, public liability cover gives you protection in the event of damage or injury occurring to a customer/member of the public or their property. This can happen either within your workplace, or on site if you are working at their home or in a public place. The very nature of manual labour work means that there is a chance of damage or injury occurring so it is therefore extremely important to make sure you protect yourself in these situations.

Another important level of cover that you should consider is that concerning your tools and equipment. Getting this added onto your policy means that in the event of loss, theft or damage to any of the tools you own, you will be able to make a claim for their cost. Without your tools it would be difficult for you to carry out your everyday work and some equipment can be extremely expensive so getting it covered makes a lot of sense.

If you decide that you are going to risk it and not bother taking out the right tradesman insurance policy then you are potentially risking your entire business. A claim brought about by a member of the public against you for an injury you have caused could lead to a massive payout and depending on your situation, the possible demise of your company. It is therefore of utmost importance that you consult a broker and find out the best level of cover for your personal situation.

Motor Trade Insurance Cover For Conversion Specialists

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Think Insurance can offer tailored Motor Trade Insurance policies for people in this area of business.

Forecourt fuel prices are at an all time high and are continually rising. Whether or not prices will stabilise is hard to judge and in the meantime it may be adviseable to try and reduce your fuel outgoings. That leaves an opportunity for people in the trade to make a decent living from this desire to save money.

Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) conversions are becoming more prominent on our roads as LPG is significantly cheaper per litre than unleaded or diesel – the price per litre can be found to be half that of petrol or diesel.

Whilst this is true, there are some issues about converting to LPG. The public may be wary of carrying LPG, believing it to be more hazardous to have in the vehicle – a misconception. LPG prices have been steadily increasing over the last few years as demand for the product has increased so others may believe that it is not economical anymore to convert. Also, there can be an issue with availability of stations to purchase the fuel.

However, most petrol engines are suitable for an LPG conversion which means that you can enjoy the cost and environmental benefits – LPG emits a lot less carbon dioxide than Petrol. The vast majority of vehicles will be converted into dual fuel meaning they can run on both LPG and petrol, and as such have two independent fuel systems & tanks. This means that you shouldn’t be able to run dry when out and about!

So, if you find this interesting maybe you could have a conversion business? When you do don’t forget to give us a call for your Motor Trader Insurance policy.

LPG conversions should only be undertaken by an LPGA Approved Conversion Specialist.
